FAQs - Otostick Baby

1. How do I use Otostick® Baby

It's really important to prepare properly before applying Otostick® Baby to get the best results.

First, clean the area behind the ear and on the scalp thoroughly with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser or toner to remove all dirt, grease and moisture from the skin. DO NOT USE ANY OIL-BASED CREMES OR MOISTURISERS as these will prevent Otostick® Baby from sticking properly. If you find that the area does need to be moisturised before applying Otostick® Baby, use an oil-free hydrogel and wait until it has dried fully before applying.

Second, BEFORE REMOVING THE PAPER FROM THE OTOSTICK® BABY, find the best position for the corrector to give the desired effect. The corrector should be applied to an area of the head with no hair for best results.

Third, remove the paper protectors carefully taking care not to touch the adhesive surface. Apply with firm pressure to the exact point of the ear identified to give the desired result. Ensure all edges of the corrector are well stuck down.

Finally, remove the protective paper from the other side of the corrector and, making sure all hair is out of the way, push the ear straight back with firm pressure against the head. Again, ensure all edges are fully stuck down.

Use the cap included in the pack (or a bandana or headscarf if you prefer) to prevent baby from pulling at their ears or accidentally removing the correctors as they are small and can present a choking hazard to babies and small children.

After a short while, you can continue with all normal activities, including swimming or bathing.

The corrector should stay in place for between 3 and 7 days depending on baby's ear shape and skin type.

After 7 days maximum, gently remove the corrector using a swab dipped in baby oil to help lift the edges if necessary, and allow the skin to breathe overnight before reapplying Otostick® Baby the next morning following the same steps used earlier.

Otostick® Baby is suitable for use from 3 months old. It is available online and from selected pharmacies.

2. How comfortable is Otostick® Baby? Will baby feel it when it's in place?

Because of the relative softness and flexibility of the ear cartilage in under-5s, it is very unlikely that baby will feel the Otostick® Baby once in position. If any discomfort is apparent, remove the corrector as detailed in the in-pack instructions and allow the area to rest for 8 hours or overnight before re-applying.

Otostick® Baby contains no known allergens, however if redness or soreness occurs discontinue use immediately and allow the skin to recover. It may be necessary to hydrate skin when the product is removed. Always ensure the skin is thoroughly cleaned and dried before applying a new Otostick® Baby corrector.

Apparent discomfort when Otostick® Baby is in place.
Check that Otostick® Baby has not been applied onto hair strands and that skin is not being pulled, or the ear being twisted in any way. Some users may need to adapt their ears gradually by wearing the product for a few hours and taking it off when it starts feeling uncomfortable. Increase the time the product is left on until the discomfort ceases.

The product comes off earlier than expected/normal.
OTOSTICK® BABY has been designed to be replaced approximately once a week, after any initial adjustment period has been completed. If the product comes off earlier than shown in the instructions, we advise you to re-read the instructions carefully and follow all steps precisely. Poor adhesion can occur if the skin has not been thoroughly cleaned before using the product. We recommend using an astringent cleanser or toner product which suits your skin type.

Skin redness or irritation.

7. How should I use the product?

Otostick® Baby is a product that can be used continuously or just for particular occasions. When used as directed for 12 months in a recently published study, 90% of subjects aged 3-72 months obtained correction of between 3mm and 10 mm after using Otostick® Baby1. It is a single-use disposable product and each corrector is designed to last up to one week. Otostick® Baby is water-resistant once in place and can be worn for showers, baths, swimming etc. Each pack of 8 gives approximately one month’s use.

A short adjustment period (not exceeding two months) may be required for the user to become comfortable with the new 'corrected' ear position. It may also take time for the person applying the product to learn how to place it correctly in accordance with the instructions. Otostick® Baby may remain in place for less time than normal during this period, although not in all cases.

8. What does it contain exactly?

Otostick® Baby is made from clear medical grade silicone, formed into a strong, flexible and almost invisible device. The device has a hypoallergenic adhesive that gently but firmly bonds to the skin at each side to keep the ear close to the side of the head, effectively correcting excessive prominence.

9. Will it correct my baby’s ears permanently?

A Spanish paediatric study1 published in July 2016 showed evidence of Otostick® Baby leading to permanent correction in children aged between 3 months and 6 years. 90% of subjects aged 3-72 months obtained correction of between 3mm and 10 mm after using Otostick® Baby for a period of 12 months. Otostick® Baby will not reduce the size of the pinna (outer ear), only the angle of the ear. Before deciding to use Otostick® Baby as a corrector method, first test to see if the ear reaches a suitable, comfortable position when held against the head, without being stretched, folded or twisted.
